Our top reasons to visit the Suffolk Coast in Autumn and Winter

10 reasons to visit the Suffolk Coast in Autumn and Winter

It’s no surprise that most people like to escape the realities of everyday living and head for a coastal retreat during the summer months.

It has the obvious perks of warmer weather, sunshine, and the children are on holiday. However, for those able to avoid the school holidays, Indian summer, autumn and winter getaways have some great benefits.

The Nest is perfect for those who want to avoid the hoards, and experience the Suffolk coast with a little more peace and tranquility.

Here’s our top reasons to visit us after the summer peak season.

  • Skip the queues!

We love Two Magpies bakery, the Aldeburgh Fish & Chip Shop, H&J’s for ice cream to name and the best part of being here in quieter periods is you’ll have to queue and wait less to get into the hottest places in town.

  • Dogs, Dogs, Dogs

Whilst we’re dog friendly all year round, some of the local beaches are closed to dogs from May to October.

Stay with us from 1st October to 30th April and the beaches belong to you and your four-legged friends for hours of play and exploration.

  • Food

Suffolk has some of the best local food, and what better way to try the huge array of produce than to visit the Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival or the Framlingham Sausage Festival!

You can take a tour of either Fisher’s Distillery in Aldeburgh, Adnams Brewery & Distillery in Southwold, or why not book a baking course at Two Magpies.

  • Blackberries

Whilst we on food, let’s talk about the most local and cheapest food of all. Blackberries!

Take a walk along the miles of beautiful footpaths, lined with bushes laden with plump ripe blackberries.

If you’re lucky some may even make it home to become crumble, but if you’re like us they’ll disappear quicker than you can pick them.

  • Local pub!

The well-earned pub drink or lunch after a long (or short!) walk in the colder weather.

Let’s face it nothing beats seeking the warmth of an open fire in a cosy pub after being exposed to the elements.

Personally, it’s a pint of Adnams Old Ale at the Lord Nelson (The Nelly), Southwold which signals the start of winter.

  • Getting active

Come September, the sea is perfect for swimming in, it’s had the summer sun on it for months making it the warmest time for a dip.

Sea swimming is great for both body and mind. As the air temperature starts to cool, cycling and walking can become much more pleasurable.

    Get active, toddler friendly

  • Toddler friendly

Got a toddler with you, pop in their waterproof suits and head out for a puddle jumping walk.

There’s nothing they love more than finding puddles of all sizes to test out their jumping skills and seeing just how wet they can get you too.

Let them find leaves and sticks to make boats with or play the floating & sinking game.

  • Deer!

As we head into late September/October we tend to see some of the larger red deer in the area. They can frequently be seen on the drive down to Outside Aldeburgh.

  • Sunsets

The sunsets, as we change seasons, they sunsets can provide some beautifully coloured skies, and as everyone knows Suffolk is known for its big skies!

  • Cure for the winter blues

Lastly, it’s the perfect antidote for the winter blues.

Take some time away from your busy schedule or usual routine. Explore new areas or try a new activity to stimulate the senses.

Changing your environment for a short time can help you to reset your mind, look at things differently and help you relax.

Take a little time for your own mental health and well-being.
